Unfortunately the food was a real issue for us.

A lovely few days in Hakone
10.0All we can say is wow! What an absolutely phenomenal time we had at Gen Hakone Gora. Of our two weeks in Japan, this was the absolute highlight. We were only there for two nights and immediately knew that we should have scheduled a few more nights. It was exactly what we needed - peaceful, relaxing, removed from the busyness of the world. It was absolutely lovely. We had a beautiful view of the mountains from our room. The onsen was extremely clean and well-taken care of. The attention to detail in decor was remarkable. We also loved the tea, snacks and wine that were available for guests in the lobby. And, of course, having kaiseki in our room was an absolute highlight. What a special cultural experience. Rai Sonu was the absolute best! She was so so kind and attentive. We were thankful she was there for each and every meal. We really felt like family by the end of our two days. Thank you again, Rai! For anyone considering staying, it's a must. I am already planning my trip back to Japan, solely to come back to Hakone and I'll be staying at Gen Hakone Gora when I do :) thanks again
− N/A - we loved everything. My mom does not eat fish, so we weren't sure how the kaiseki was going to go but they were extremely accommodative and she ended up loving her meals.
A very disappointing experience and definitely not aligned with reviews or cost
3.0I just returned from a 12 day trip to Japan. My adult daughter and I were absolutely thrilled with every aspect of our trip, but Gen Hakone Gora was the one disappointment. While the room itself and its comfortable spaces were lovely, we both agreed the food, service and overall experience was incredibly disappointing. Not only was the food horrible, but the hotel is set up in a way that forces you to stay in your rooms when you're not out and about. There's very little positive to say, although we did enjoy the proximity to Gora and appreciated the car service to and from the train station.
− The food was awful and we felt trapped in our room! Meals are only served in your room and it seemed like it was all prepared way in advance so not fresh. Morning breakfasts, were all served "cold" including the coffee and my American eggs. Both my daughter and I had nausea after the first night, and the fish was definitely not fresh. Prior to this stay, we had amazing experiences in every other Ryokan which made this even more disappointing. The staff were all sweet but spoke very little English and while we appreciated their effort, it was hard to communicate on details and the attempts we made (all food related) did not result in any improvements. Thrice disappointed given other reviews and the cost -- absolutely not worth what we paid and wish I could get my money back!
Amazing experience
8.0The view
− The toilet
Lovely, quiet hotel for a traditional Onsen / dining weekend away
8.0The layout and design of the room was a mix of traditional Japanese and modern Western architecture. The rooftop terrace with the private Onsen overlooking the valley was the spectacular highlight. The in-room breakfast and dining was spectacular (the kitchen has one Michelin Star).
− The lobby / hallways and exterior of the hotel looked slightly dated but were very well maintained. The location is right on top of the hillside, therefore tougher to reach by foot, transport is in the quiet Gora rather difficult to get, the hotel shuttle that operates till 9pm aside.
Very very good hotel and best staffs
10.0Nice Japanese minimalist modern design room, super clean and neat, lighting very welcome
− Almost nothing, juts hope it may have some storage space that can hanging clothes, put luggages inside
